Over the last decade, Pedro Rodriguez and his children Pedro Pablo and Daniela have worked tirelessly to build the quality of, and market for, Bolivian specialty coffee. Initially, the family purchased and processed micro-lots from small producers. Over time, however, coffee production in Bolivia declined, as many farmers abandoned low-yielding, aging coffee plantations in favour of lucrative crops like coca (used in the illegal drug trade). In response to this, the Rodriguez family decided to invest in their own farms. “We had to give an example,” Pedro says, “showing that it is possible to build a sustainable and profitable coffee culture, and to keep Bolivia on the world’s coffee map.”
Today, the family has 12 thriving farms, including Finca Kusillo. They are producing exceptional coffees in a financially and environmentally sustainable way and, through training programs and support, they are helping Bolivian farmers improve their own coffee production, and their livelihoods.
Kusillo (which means ‘monkey’), is a cheeky character that acts as a jester in many folkloric dances from the Bolivian highlands. Dancers representing the kusillo wear bright, colourful masks and leap and dance for the crowd’s entertainment. The family named their farm Kusillo to express their philosophy that positivity and good humour should be present in everything we do – especially at harvest time, when people get together to celebrate the culmination of the coffee season.
