Ruera Estate is a coffee plantation located in Kiambu County, approximately 15km from Riuru township. It has 190 hectares of coffee production with its main focus on producing high quality coffee while providing employment for over 1000 Kenyans within its coffee production processes. It is one of the oldest single estates in the Kenya.
Positioned upon red volcanic soil, the landscape of Ruera is gradually sloping among low-lying hills. The coffee plantation itself is dispersed between shade trees while picking is strictly done manually by the estates workers.
This lot has undergone a naturally processed method, which is very uncommon in Kenya. Traditionally coffee is fully pulped and washed in Kenya, however this is a high quality natural processed lot not commonly found in coffees from here.
Cherries are laid out on a single layer on raised beds and turned frequently to ensure even drying and fermentation; key for an expressive and clean natural coffee. This process takes weeks and is very space intensive as opposed to the Kenya washed process.
We feel this process has added extra balance to what you would expect from a typical Kenyan coffee, and added an extra layer of syrupy sweetness which compliments the high acidity. A delicious first for us and a great flavour experience from Kenya.
