Jojo Estate is a small farm owned by Joseph Njoroge Njuguna and managed by his wife Irene (pictured). Situated in the foothills of the extinct Mt Kenya volcano, the farm’s nutrient-rich soil and the area’s cool climate contribute to the high quality of the coffee produced here.
Irene’s hands-on management has been key to Jojo Estate’s success. Progressive and quality- focused, she retired from a successful career in business and now oversees the farm’s coffee production – from plant propagation and cherry picking, through to the processing and drying of the beans.
This coffee was wash-processed in a small wet mill – or ‘factory’ as they’re called locally – on the farm. On-site processing is unusual for Kenya, and more expensive than central processing, but it gives Irene and Joseph greater oversight and quality control. All this attentive hard work is evident in the cup – this coffee is beautifully sweet, distinct and complex.
