Raisin and chocolate with a sweet finish
Origin: Gakenke District, Rwanda
Variety: red bourbon
Process: washed
Producer: Marie Bedabasingwa
Relationship length: since 2021
Producer Marie Bedabasingwa is 66 years old and has worked in coffee for decades. Marie was tragically widowed in the 1994 Rwandan genocide and was then faced with the responsibility of being the sole caretaker and provider for her five children. Coffee played an important role in Marie’s journey to rebuilding her life and gaining a steady income. Today, she owns 600 coffee trees, and she recently planted another 50 coffee seedlings.

It’s extremely rare to be able to source coffee from a single smallholder producer in Rwanda, as most will combine their harvest with that of other producers via a washing station or farmer group. One of the reasons we’re able to offer this special micro-lot is that Marie is a member of the Dukunde Kawa Cooperative, which owns its own dry mill where smaller lots can be processed individually while minimising cost and maintaining quality.

At harvest time, Marie delivers her coffee cherries to the cooperative’s Ruli washing station. The coffee is hand sorted to make sure only the ripest cherries are processed. It’s then carefully washed processed before being dried on raised beds for around two weeks.

In the cup, this coffee is rich and distinct, with notes of raisin and chocolate, and a sweet finish. We love it, and we hope to offer Marie’s coffee for years to come!
