The latest addition to our single-origin menu is Kenya Kaguyu AB, a coffee that holds fast to Kenya’s reputation for bright, complex berry qualities as well as sweetness and intense acidity.

Single Origin Coffee Description

This coffee is from the Kaguyu Factory, a cooperative located in the Kirinyaga region servicing 850 smallholder producers. Most farmers in this region own less than a hectare of land and grow an average of 200 coffee plants per farm.

Our lot is made up of two varieties of the famous SL series - SL-28 and SL-34 - a varietal quite common across the country. The acronym SL stands for Scott Laboratories, a research organisation tasked to develop high-quality coffee varieties between 1934 and 1963. SL-28 and SL-34 are high yielding varietals that produce exceptional quality at high altitudes and are drought resistant in part thanks to the red volcanic soil which is prevalent in the region. 

Another contributing factor to Kenya’s distinct flavour profile is their double fermentation washed process, a method unique to Kenyan coffees. Double fermentation is labour intensive, requiring a lot of water and bulky resources. This version of the washed processing method also must be executed with care, consistency, and precision.

The investment in effort pays dividends for our Kenya Kaguyu with a clean, crisp and distinctive profile. You can expect notes of plum, goji berries, caramel, fresh butter and a vibrant grapefruit acidity. It’s a flavour profile we love. We think you’ll love it too.
