Buried amongst expansive coconut and cacao plantations, Papua New Guinea’s coffee growing regions are relative newcomers to the specialty coffee scene. In PNG, 85% of the country's coffee is produced by smallholders but historically, it’s been particularly difficult to organise farmers in collectives or cooperatives. This is partially due to the remote locations of smallholders and the incredible diversity of tribal groups and languages.

Most farmers in PNG grow coffee on small plots of land intercropped with other cash and subsistence crops. Land where coffee is grown can be more aptly described as “coffee gardens” than as farms or plantations. Many of these gardens are isolated to remote locations and lack reliable roads and bridges to deliver their harvest to market. The dispersion of growers combined with historically-poor infrastructure has made the transition to specialty difficult. Nonetheless, the country is working towards innovative solutions that will lead to better quality coffee and improved livelihoods for the nation’s smallholder coffee producers.

Sourced by Sucafina, the Lamari blend is named for the Lamari River that flows through PNG's Eastern Highlands. With an 83 to 84 Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) cup score, Lamari offers dark chocolate, mandarin orange, and black tea flavours that are accompanied by pronounced sweetness, a clean finish and a light-to-medium body.

Note: We have developed an espresso profile for this coffee - meaning it is roasted a little darker than would normally suit filter brew methods. If you're using pour over, Aeropress, batch brew, plunger or other filter brew methods we recommend our Single Origin Filter Roast. However, we're more than happy to supply any of our coffees ground to any specifications - coffee is a personal journey, and we are excited to take that journey with you.
