Tarrazu what the do? The Tarrazu region is one of the most famous coffee-producing regions in the world. Why? Like most things, there is a combination of skill, dedication and luck. Tirra Estate enjoys a rich biodiverse soil composition, a stable temperate climate and highly skilled and experienced producers. Consistently listed in the all-star lineup of coffee-producing regions, Costa Rica strikes a seemingly contradictory cultural balance between traditional values and excellence through innovation and leadership.

Innovation, you say? Hailed as the pioneers of honey processing, it was once again a combination of skill and circumstance that led to a group of Costa Rican producers banding together and inspiring a region-defining legacy. The new honey process would be born out of a desire to differentiate, increase and improve in-cup characteristics and out of necessity, as extreme water shortages and strict government-controlled water restrictions would make traditional washing processes impossible.

Coopetarrazu: Coopetarrazu Co-op lies at the pulsing heart of the Tarrazu growing region and sees itself not as exploiting the land but as a part of it. The Coopetarrazu co-op belongs to the people and its community, and it has implemented a 'Coffee, culture, quality of life' sustainability plan to track environmental impacts, continually improve best practices, and foster a culture of ecological sustainability and respect amongst its members and their families. After all, coffee tends to be a multi-generational endeavour, with many coffee-farming family children likely to follow in their parents' coffee-farming footsteps.

Why join the Co-op? Education is vital--Subjects at Coopetarrazu focus on the importance of healthy ecosystems and waterways, reforestation, topography impacts, and integration into surrounding ecosystems. Upon membership, coffee seeds are provided-- these are suitable Varietals adapted to Costa Rica's unique climate and San Marcos microclimate. Ongoing soil analysis is also offered as part of membership, with many producers regularly getting their soil tested and farmers subsequently adjusting their practices and soil composition depending on their specific soil needs.

Fostering a culture of care: The Coopetarrazu Co-op conduct regular education programs to engage and inspire community youth. Particular focus is placed on tracking and monitoring bird and insect populations and each species' role in a healthy coffee ecosystem. A seasonal bean: The Co-op also supports the influx of seasonal migrant workers who flock to Tarrazu during harvest with on-site housing. Along with 'on the ground' support, Coopetarrazu also makes an effort to recognise coffee's cultural significance to its members; one of the ways they do this is by commemorating harvest time with festivals that celebrate indigenous cultural heritage.

By enjoying a super tasty cup of this clean and sweet natural coffee from Coopetarrazu, you directly support reinvestment into the Coopetarrazu Co-op, its region and its members.
