The details
Bumba is grown by 698 smallholders on plots averaging just 800 square metres, each carrying around 200 Red Bourbon trees intercropped with beans, bananas, maize and cassava.
Long Miles Coffee, founded by Ben and Kristy Carlson in 2011, has steadily moved washing and drying infrastructure closer to these families, paying higher cherry prices and running field schools, savings groups and leadership programs. Cherry is floated, hand sorted and disc pulped on the day of picking, fermented under water, washed in channels and dried slowly on raised beds. Padre directs $4 from every kilo sold to Trees for Kibira, a reforestation project in Burundi.
