In the cup: Elegant and refined, this cup has soft milky tones with dried apple and creamy hazelnut. Rather than the zing one can get from a fresh pineapple, this filter boasts a little more complexity with caramelisation and acidity reminiscent of grilled pineapple. This espresso has clarity and sweetness, sophistication and nuance. This is all held together by a light milk chocolate present throughout and lingering long after your cup is dry.
The Mamni Family: The family name Mamani is common in Bolivia, but there's nothing common about the Mamani family that brought us this cracking microlot. Mauricio, Nolberto, René, Juana, and Juan have synonymised the Mamani name with exceptional quality and positive community impact.
When the Mamani family first got into coffee, they would sell it locally as café en mote--or wet parchment. With limited international or broader market appeal, this early style of coffee preparation was fairly basic and proved to be a low economic crop produced to serve residents. Luckily this did not stay this way for long. With the arrival of the cup of excellence in Bolivia, the Mamani family began to focus on producing sustainable specialty coffee and now grows and produces some of the absolute best coming out of Bolivia.
Juana's coffee journey began at a young age. She began working on her sister's nearby farm, working hard and saving much of what she earned. After 5 years Juana had saved up enough money to purchase her first farm: a six-hectare coffee farm that would be the catalyst for something extraordinary and catapult her in amongst the coffee elite. In 2007, at just 23 years of age, Juana was awarded second place at Bolivia's cup of excellence with a score of 90.78. Talk about a meteoric rise!
Sol de la Mañana program: The Mamani family regularly sell their quality green coffee to the Rodríguez family at Agricafe as part of their Sol de la Mañana program. Through the skills they have learned as part of the program and selective picking, their top-grade coffees have been able to be sold at substantially higher prices and with an ever-increasing demand.
Courses at Sol de Manana are structured around healthy, sustainable coffee practices, which take participants through building and maintaining a coffee nursery, how and when to prune, when and what types of fertiliser to use, how to manage pests and prevent leaf rust, as well as how to pick coffee selectively.
Agricafe has also helped to optimise the Mamani's land, consulting with them on how to maximise their land use and facilities to help promote quality, long-term, sustainable farming that will allow quality practices and a healthy bottom line.
