Ethiopia

Negussie Gemeda Mude

Sidama region, Bensa district Keramo/Hayisa village

2100 masl

Heirloom

Natural

Blueberry, white peach, and violet florals.

In the cup: Incredibly juicy and super sweet, our second release "Top Shelf Super Fine" filter boasts COE caliber complexity and outstanding clarity. This is a rare treat with luscious fruit that is so rarely tasted with a finish this clean in a straight-up natural. Unmistakable notes of sweet blueberry and ripe stone fruit dance, teasing out tropical fruit and jasmine florals. This fruity filter is gentle and silky leaving the palate cleanly and delicately in a way that is honestly just unapologetically purple.

The producer: A sustainable coffee farmer in the Sadama region, Negussie Gemeda Mude came to eminence in 2020 winning the coveted Cup of Excellence Ethiopia 2020. His incredible score of 91.04 showcased his pride and passion, saying to Barista Magazine "I think my win is historic because Cup of Excellence was held in Ethiopia for the first time in Ethiopia and I am the first winner...I am also very proud that I presented Sidama coffee, which I believe is one of the best coffees in Ethiopia." His tiny little beans so full of fruit and life are harvested on his 3-hectare farm at a "chest grabbing" 2100 MASL (yikes where's my oxygen mask!). Mr Mude's beautiful farm shares its eastern border with the Harenna Forrest National Park with its fertile red loamy topsoil that is rich in nutrients and unique to the region. Negussie farms an additional 10 hectares growing wheat, teff, barley, bamboo, and an assortment of vegetables. Negussie and his wife are also raising four sons and three daughters so we may just see from this exceptional producer a family tradition of supreme regional representation for years to come.

Why is it so good? It takes a lot to go right to produce a coffee of this excellence and consistency (check out that screen size! So small but so consistently small). This is a beautiful representation of a highly skilled and meticulous producer, growing varietals that thrive in unparalleled conditions with proven traditional processing techniques that are consistently controlled and treated with the utmost care. The stars have truly aligned for this very special microlot--so if you're a fan of that classic blueberry Ethiopian Natural, but with a Michelin star-like attention to detail and sophistication then this is a must-try.
